Laboratory Description

Batik is a fabric dyeing technique that originated in India about 2000 years ago. The origin of the word Batik comes from the Javanese word amba (to write) and the Indonesian word titik (“dot”).

Batik consists in applying hot wax to certain areas of the fabric. The traditional method of wax application is done by means of a tool known as canting, through which the hot wax passes and in pen-like fashion designs are drawn on the fabric, blocking the passage of colour in these areas. The canting are made in our goldsmith’s laboratory to obtain different sizes.

Very precious fabrics are produced, with particular colours and designs.

This technique is called batik tulis (written batik) after the appearance in the 19th century of the batik cap, made with a cast that “prints” the wax that acts as a barrier between the fabric and colour.

Natural fabrics such as cotton, wool and silk are used. The colours resist very well to the passage of time, washing and sunlight, as the fabrics are completely immersed in the dye so that they can absorb the shades.
In this course, we will create collections of prints by means of a predetermined project, after having studied colour and its nuances, according to the quality of the fabric we are going to use; we will develop a colour chart for each project, which will vary, achieving different nuances that make it unique. We will test the technique with different materials and weights and with natural and organic dyes. We will examine the history and journey of batik through Asia, learning to differentiate Batik by its design and patterns, according to cultures throughout history.

These courses have been designed with the aim of deepening the understanding of the printing process, obtaining the necessary knowledge of the different threads and natural materials, linen, silk, cotton and its different weights, colour and dyeing.

Participants will acquire the necessary knowledge to create printed products from the start to possible market expansion, obtaining results that only manual skill can achieve.

You will develop a workbook during the entire process including your projects, photographic images, drawings and applications that you have made yourself so you can present a professional portfolio.
At the end of the course, you will receive a certificate and diploma that will guarantee your knowledge and level attained.
