Why choose this course at Laboratorio Firenze?

Attending a fashion course in Florence is a unique opportunity that few can experience. The concept of fashion as we understand it today emerged in Florence, and more specifically in the Renaissance, with the introduction of new genres and a high degree of professionalism in sewing. Renaissance Italy saw the appearance of the richest and most spectacular costumes in history, with vivid colours and imaginative and original shapes, giving great importance to sleeves, pleats and vertical folds of the fabric, with fine embroidery and rich trimmings.

In these workshops we will work the moulage technique. Moulage is a three-dimensional design and production technique that allows great freedom in terms of design. From time immemorial, moulage has been a widely used technique in the field of haute couture.

As well as being the cradle of the Renaissance, Florence has a long tradition and a worldwide reputation in the world of fashion and art, perfectly intertwining tradition, contemporaneity and modernity.

In Florence you can visit the most interesting museums of Renaissance costumes and art. You will be able to participate in seminars that have been following this wonderful tradition for years and you will learn the techniques to be among the top professionals.

Laboratory Description

Fashion and narrative

Design your own unique collection

  • Minimum one month, introduction to narrative fashion
  • Development of the collection – 3 months
  • Project and realization of collection, and final presentation – 6 months

In this practical design workshop, you will create a collection based on the underlying theme of a story, your story, whichever one you decide…

We will give different forms and textures to create on the stand clothes from a creative conceptual point of view, where you will decide the form, colours and applications to use. You will learn about the most important artists who have influenced in a fundamental way the realization of a collection as we know it today.

We will study the methodology and the work of the great masters of conceptual fashion, Elsa Schiaparelli and Paul Pointer and their Maison du Couture in Rue de St Honoré.

Elsa Schiaparelli was an artist who lived in the splendour of surrealism, she knew how to interpret that anger and activity and used fashion as a means of artistic expression. Her influence is so important in contemporary fashion that there is a before and after Elsa Schiaparelli. Her work is the mother of fashion as we understand it now. Her influence is fundamental to understand the most important contemporary fashion designers of our time, Prada, Karl Lagerfeld, Jean Paul Gaultier, Alexander McQueen, Moschino, Gucci, Vivian Westwood.

Through trial and error, you will work on the stand to obtain your idea.

You will learn about the subjects, their origin, their qualities and how to develop your collections through them.

You will learn about basic patterns and how to transform them into unique pieces.

All our classes are practical and experimental, the objective is to learn through practical lessons to control every stage of the creative development of a collection.
